PALMETTOPRIDE 2009-2010 TREE GRANT WINNERS ANNOUNCED
 For Immediate Release Media Contact: September 30, 2009 Sarah Robinson, 803-758-6034 PALMETTOPRIDE 2009-2010 TREE GRANT WINNERS ANNOUNCED 3,000 Trees for Beautification Projects Around the State Columbia, SC – PalmettoPride, the state anti-litter and beautification organization, announced this week the recipients for the Fall Tree Grant. Fifty-eight (58) entities received nearly 3,000 trees for beautification projects. (See attached list of recipients.) The trees donated in this grant are to be used in beautification projects on public spaces. This year, 17 types of trees, including several varieties of Crepe Myrtle and Dogwoods, were available. All trees follow SC native tree growing guidelines. All recipients are required to follow planting and maintenance guidelines and participate in the Great American Cleanup of South Carolina. Some example projects this year include school plantings, fire department beautification, municipal green spaces and park improvements. “We had our largest number of available trees this year and are thrilled to see them all get homes across this state,” said Linda Shadel, Director of Operations for PalmettoPride. This grant is possible through efforts at the SC Department of Corrections. PalmettoPride provides seedlings to the prison horticulture departments. The horticulture staff and inmates nurture the seedlings until they grow into 5-gallon containers and are granted out to groups across the state. The PalmettoPride Tree Grant was created to assist local communities create green spaces on public grounds. This grant is available to any group working on public projects and can be awarded along with other PalmettoPride grants: Challenge for the Environment, KSCB, Community Pride Grant and Enforcement. PalmettoPride is South Carolina's statewide anti-litter and beautification organization. Their mission is to eradicate litter and promote beautification. They accomplish this mission using a four-pronged approach of education, enforcement, awareness and pickup.
