TRAINING DAY HELD FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ENFORCEMENT
Litter Control Officers Instruct Peers on Awareness of Zero Tolerance for Litter Columbia, SC – Statewide enforcement officers gathered at the SC Forestry Commission headquarters today to learn about Awareness of Zero Tolerance for Litter. The half-day seminar was lead by enforcement officers to instruct their peers on the mission, history and how-to's of organizing Zero Tolerance campaigns in their own communities. The Awareness of Zero Tolerance for Litter Campaign will be April 17 – 19, 2009. Officers from around the state will gather at the State House on Wednesday April 15, 2009, for a press conference. Media outlets are encouraged to attend the press conference. Local media tours will occur across the state that weekend as well. Officer Ryan Lesesne of Hartsville, president of the SC Litter Control Association moderated the seminar. Lt. Chris Cowan with Richland County Sheriff's Department presented the Broken Window Theory. David West with the SC Forestry Commission discussed the effects of litter on forestry. Officer Jamie Nelson of Spartanburg Environmental Enforcement shared tips on creative investigating. Corporal Rob Williams with the State Transport Police discussed the issue of unsecured loads. Awareness of Zero Tolerance for Litter Weekend is an annual event where enforcement officers across the state from municipalities to state agencies come together to uphold SC litter laws and educate the public on litter. PalmettoPride hosted the event in cooperation with their Enforcement Committee and the SC Litter Control Association. PalmettoPride is committed to the eradication of litter and the promotion of beautification in South Carolina. We will accomplish this by leading the effort to motivate and organize groups to clean up existing debris. Our focus is on four essential areas of concern: education, enforcement, awareness and pickup resulting in behavioral change. # # #
