2nd ANNUAL FRANCIS MARION NATIONAL FOREST CLEANUP PLANNED FOR FEB. 7, 2009

MEDIA ADVISORY

 

WHAT:            Volunteers are needed for a clean up day on the Francis Marion National Forest to remove trash and large items from illegal dumpsites in the forest. Volunteers will meet at Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center (5821 Highway 17 North, Awendaw, South Carolina) at 8 a.m. and will be given directions to cleanup sites. Cleanup supplies will be provided.  Lunch will be served at noon for all volunteers.

 

WHEN:            Saturday, February 7, 2008. 8 a.m. – noon.

                        Charleston County Solid Waste       Berkeley County Solid Waste

 

WHERE:         Francis Marion National Forest: Located off Highway 17 between Georgetown and Charleston, this 252,368-acre forest provides wildlife enthusiasts with an abundance of activities such as hiking, paddling, bird watching and hunting. The forest also has access to the Intracoastal Waterway and is part of the Palmetto Trail.

OTHER:          As part of their Forest, Parks and Waterways program, PalmettoPride coordinates this cleanup annually with the USDA Forest Service.  During last year's cleanup, 150 volunteers removed 33 tons of litter, household furniture and three boats from the forest.
