Volunteers Needed to Help Remove Trash from Our National Treasure
Columbia, SC – USDA Forest Service and PalmettoPride will host a cleanup on the Enoree Ranger District of the Sumter National Forest on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008. Volunteers are needed to clean up illegal dumpsites and litter from one of this country's most beautiful natural resources. Outdoor enthusiasts, service clubs, environmentalists and concerned citizens are encouraged to participate.
“We are extremely pleased to be working with PalmettoPride in this area of the national forest,” said Enoree District Ranger Beth Lemaster. “This partnership has led to some amazing results on both the Francis Marion and Sumter national forests; I look forward to a huge public turnout so we can accomplish the same results on the Enoree.”
This will be the first planned cleanup in this area of the forest. USDA Forest Service and PalmettoPride have coordinated five forest cleanups over the past four years in both the Francis Marion National Forest and the Sumter National Forest in Greenwood and Aiken Counties. More than 800 people have helped remove over 100 tons of trash.
“We hope that folks will take advantage of the beautiful fall weather and spend a day with us cleaning up trash and illegal dumpsites,” said Linda Shadel, Director of Operations for PalmettoPride. “It's a great opportunity to have fun, get some exercise and help protect our natural resources.”
Participants are asked to meet at 8 a.m. at the Enoree Ranger Station located at 3557 Whitmire Hwy., Union. PalmettoPride will supply gloves, vests and other supplies. Lunch will be served at noon for all volunteers.
PalmettoPride is the state anti-litter and beautification organization.
