PRIDE WEEK BLITZ AIMS TO CLEAN UP LITTER IN SPARTANBURG COUNTY

PalmettoPride and Spartanburg Team Up to Tackle Litter

Columbia, SC— Spartanburg County Environmental Enforcement Department and PalmettoPride have teamed up to tackle litter.  Residents are encouraged to plan cleanups in their communities during the week of March 8 – 15, 2008, as part of PalmettoPride's Pride Week blitz program.  Volunteers are needed to join in cleanups and organize cleanups throughout the county.

Pride Week kicks off on Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Lowe's at 2079 E. Main Street in Spartanburg   Come out and listen to a live radio remote with B 93.7 and enjoy music, promotional giveaways and good clean fun.  The event will give interested groups the opportunity to sign up for activities during the week and pick up cleanup kits and safety vests.

“We're happy to be the 12th county to participate in Pride Week,” said Don Arnold, Director of Spartanburg County Environmental Enforcement.  “We've seen the results from other counties and can't wait to increase our volunteer base.  We rely on our volunteers to help us keep Spartanburg clean.”

Several events have already been planned for the week and more are expected.   Some of the first events to sign up are as follows:

  • Garden Club Cleanup  - Ivy League – Saturday, March 8
  • Community Service Cleanup – March 12
  • Vanderbilt Hills Community Association – March 8 (and every weekend for 20 years!)
  • “Litter Trashes Everyone” Marionette Show for Reidville Elementary  - March 11 at 9:30am
  • “Litter Trashes Everyone” Marionette Show for Pauline-Glenn Springs Elementary – March 11 at 1:30

Pride Week, a PalmettoPride initiative for South Carolina communities, recruits local citizens to participate in litter cleanup and beautification efforts in their county. The week-long event focuses on four essential areas: education, enforcement, awareness and pick-up. Twelve counties have participated in Pride Weeks bringing together over 26,000 participants to remove over 390 tons of trash and recyclables from our communities.

Litter has a serious, negative effect on the economy and image of South Carolina. PalmettoPride is an umbrella organization that is leading the effort to make the state litter free by unifying citizens, state agencies, law enforcement, the private sector, statewide media, local organizations and Keep South Carolina Beautiful and its local affiliates.
