RECYCLING RETURNS TO WILLIAMS-BRICE

Volunteers Needed for Home Game Recycling Stations

Columbia, SC- Gamecock fans will once again be able to recycle glass, plastic and aluminum during home games this season with the return of the Recycling & Litter Partnership.  Approximately 75 recycling stations will be placed at entrances to Williams-Brice and select sites inside the stadium.

“We are excited about our on-going partnership with the University Recycling program during football games.  University of South Carolina was our pilot program and we saw good results during our two-year partnership and we expect excellent results this year and the years to come,” said Rick Cothran, Director of Operations for PalmettoPride.  “We had lots of folks contact us last year wanting to volunteer.”

An average 80,000 people walk through the doors at Williams-Brice during each home game.  The recycling program not only helps eliminate waste going to the landfill, it provides a built-in audience for education on the importance of litter reduction and recycling.

This program also gives people an opportunity to help in another way – volunteer to man a recycling station.  Volunteers are needed to man each recycling station during the games.  Volunteers must report to the stadium one hour before game time and work through half time.   Volunteers receive a t-shirt, free entrance to the game and can stay and watch the second half of the game after their shifts.

“We believe in setting good examples – both on the field and off,” said Jeff Davis, Associate Athletics Director for Operations and Facilities.  “By offering recycling at the games, we not only reduce waste but we give visitors an easy way to be good stewards of the environment.”

PalmettoPride, the state anti-litter and beautification organization, helped launch the University of South Carolina Recycling program back in 2004.  In 2005, Gamecocks fans recycled over 7,000 pounds of plastic bottles in the second year of the program.  Recycling continued in a limited capacity during the 2006 football season.  Two other universities have signed on board with PalmettoPride to recycle at stadiums - SC State is entering its second year and Clemson University is expanding its recycling program.

If you or your organization would be interested in volunteering during the games, please contact Jennifer Fisher at PalmettoPride, jfisher@palmettopride.org.
