ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY HOLDS ANNUAL AWARDS LUNCHEON
PalmettoPride hosted its annual Adopt-A-Highway awards luncheon today at Stone River in West Columbia, SC. Groups from around the state gathered to receive awards for volunteer litter pickup efforts.
Adopt-A-Highway is a volunteer litter pickup program coordinated by PalmettoPride in partnership with SC Department of Transportation.
In 2014, 24,751 volunteers from 1,904 groups picked up 1,064,762.5 pounds of litter from 4,707.34 miles of highway.
Proverbs 3 from Saluda County received the District 2 award as well as State Group of the Year. Proverbs 3 is one dedicated volunteer who adopts 6 miles of highway and picked up 3,330 pounds of trash last year.
Adopt-A-Highway awards groups at the county level, district level and state level. District Awards went to the following groups:
District 1 – Lake Murray Irmo Rotary Club (Richland County)
District 2 – Proverbs 3 (Saluda County)
District 3 – Knights of Columbus 10819 (Greenville County)
District 4 – Cherokee County Junior Women’s Club (Cherokee County)
District 5 – Sampit Community Watch Group (Georgetown County)
District 6 – VA Tech Alumni Association Charleston Charter (Charleston County)
District 7 – Barnwell County Detention Center (Barnwell County)
In addition to awarding groups, Adopt-A-Highway awards individuals for coordinating county volunteer efforts.
Denise Brown, Anderson County Coordinator with the Department of Transportation received the Coordinator of the Year award.
Fritz Wewers also with Anderson County, received the Resident Maintenance Engineer Award.
